I really started enjoying this vegetable a few years ago when I was undergoing treatment for endometriosis. It was summer and every day I’d drink a glass of lauki juice with one amla grated in. Despite the synthetic hormones I was on, my skin stayed clear. I have to credit this natural remedy for that. However one must take care to choose a gourd that is not bitter as that may be toxic. Lauki that is grown in unclean soil with polluted water can absorb toxins, which leads to the bitter flavour. So one must always taste it before juicing or cooking with it. A bland, almost sweet-tasting lauki is a wonderful and tremendously underestimated health tonic.
